ANNA GAJEWSZKY, IN THE SEARCH FOR VENUS, 2021

““The series In the search for Venus depicts an intimate examination of my femininity, my body and its comparison to ancient portrayals of Venus.

I was 18 years old when I was told by several doctors I had fertility issues, and that becoming pregnant would be difficult for me. Back then it caused me a frightening shock, I was clueless of the way forward. I always had issues with accepting my body and femininity and in this series I face my biggest fear, my own body. In the meantime I started searching and looking at several versions of Venus depictions in fine art to compare to my own female body. This led me to prehistoric, foundational Venus portrayals which I’ve used to build my own pieces on. Included in the series are pieces which make up an imaginary birthing process, others where I toy with the idea of motherhood.” - Anna Gajewszky
