ZORA J. MURFF X PICTURING SEX: WHY IS IT SO HARD TO GET AN ACADEMIC ARTS JOB?

Zora J Murff is an artist and educator who currently lives in Rhode Island, but will soon be living in Oregon. He has about a decade of teaching experience between community colleges, research institutions, and private art schools. As an artist, Zora makes works that consider the social applications and functions of photography and the imagery it produces. He takes special interest in how the creation and nature of image culture legitimizes systems of domination and control. Murff has created multiple books of his artwork including his most recent monograph, True Colors (Or, Affirmations in A Crisis), published by Aperture Foundation. His work has been collected internationally including the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Studio Museum in Harlem.

Zora shares some of his experiences in navigating the academic arts job market and answers questions from the group. This process is grueling, rife with discrimination, and extremely hard to navigate without the advice of the folks who have walked this path before us. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to the minds of people like Zora so I hope this conversation makes those going through this process feel less alone and more empowered.
